If you’re a subscriber to Highlights magazine, or are in a doctor’s or dentist’s office this next month, check out my article about Boontling in the August issue on page 40 and 41, A Language All Their Own.

Boontling was a language made up by people living in Anderson Valley in California to basically keep outsiders out of the conversation. But the language was also used as a strategy in baseball games so that the other team couldn’t figure out the directions players were giving each other.

There’s also a fun sidebar which is a firsthand account by Don “Wes” Smoot of a time when a stranger came to town and the locals had fun with him by giving directions in Boontling.
