The Second Book of Christmas

Standard

This is the second day of my “The Twelve Books of Christmas” blog series. Each day through December 12 I will showcase a book written by a Colorado author who lives in the Fort Collins area. Please spread the Support Local Businesses love by purchasing a book by a local author at a local bookstore. That way your purchase will put a smile on everyone’s face.

Two independent bookstores that I recommend in Fort Collins are: Old Firehouse Books in Old Town, and Reader’s Cove on Harmony Rd. You can also find books at JAX Outdoor Gear on North College, Clothes Pony in Old Town, and the Northern Colorado Writers Studio at 108 East Monroe Dr. (Across from Tres Margaritas). Ask if they have any autographed copies in stock.

If you like true adventure stories, then you’ll like …

Two best friends—Jim Davidson and Mike Price—climbed Mount Rainier, an ice-capped volcano in the Pacific Northwest. Seasoned climbers possessed by a desire for self-growth through extraordinary challenge, they choose to ascend Liberty Ridge, one of the mountain’s most difficult and dangerous routes. On the way down, just thirty minutes from solid ground, a snowbridge collapses beneath Jim’s feet.  Tied together, the partners drop eighty feet into a hidden glacial crevasse, land on a ice ledge, and are buried in a collapse of snow. Mike dies instantly, leaving Jim to do the impossible: to scale an eighty-foot wall of overhanging ice in the wake of losing his best friend.

Told in parallel narratives, The Ledge (Ballantine, 2011) not only recounts Jim and Mike’s amazing story of tragedy and survival, it is an inspirational tale that illuminates the importance of simple determination and resiliency in the face of challenge and loss. A heart-stopping adventure story, The Ledge chronicles one man’s transforming odyssey from the dizzying heights of elation to the punishing depths of hard-won wisdom.  The Wall Street Journal said in their review “The Ledge is a moving portrait of friendship and loss”.

This real-life survival epic was selected by Amazon.com as one the Best Books of 2011 in the Outdoors & Nature category so it is perfect for any climber, hiker or mountain lover on your gift list. Also, non-climbers will embrace the life lessons about resilience and perseverance.

Jim Davidson

Written by Fort Collins resident Jim Davidson, an accomplished climber, speaker, and writer and by co-author, Kevin Vaughan, a versatile reporter and writer at The Denver Post who was a finalist for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in feature writing.
